Making it easier to locate engine problems

What is the issue?
Engines are very reliable if they are looked after, particularly so diesel. Yet they do have occasional problems.

Why address this?
Detecting engine issues earlier can save expense and problems at sea.

How to address this?
If you are purchasing a new engine, request that it comes in white. Alternatively, if for some reason the engine is removed for reconditioning have it painted white. Then keep it absolutely clean.

A white engine will immediately show any signs of water, fuel, oil leaks or exhaust issues. The old sailing saying ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ also applies to engines and it is a tradition in large yachts to paint engines white for this reason. Spotting problems early and getting them attended to, can stop a major situation developing or catching you out when you least want it.
